Hidden Characteristics and Emotions

Hidden Characteristics and Emotions
After identifying the concept that reflections may not present all features of the entities shown, I explored the hidden characteristics and emotions of actual individuals.

“To the Core” – Acrylic painting.

Inspired by M.C. Escher, Giorgia Napoletano, Federico Bebber, Sebastian Eriksson, and Agnes Toth to portray an individual’s inner and outer features. This final piece expresses the concept that there is more depth to an individual than meets the eye; there is mystery and darkness within a bright and softly presented exterior.
“Fractured” – Acrylic painting.

The fractured technique is inspired by Agnes Toth to portray incompleteness and reconstruction. The faint palette and soft edged patches depict a sense of contentment while the incomplete sections represent the missing pieces in one’s life.

“Beauty is Out of Focus” – Acrylic painting. My copy of Thomas Saliot’s “Beauty is Out of Focus”.

The bold strokes and contrasting colours accentuate the distraught emotion. The expression of vulnerability is powerful and relatable, thus drawing in the audience.

“Rain Princess” – Oil painting. My copy of Leonid Afremov’s “Rain Princess”.

This is a unique painting style with bright and contrasting colours to portray a busy but uplifting environment. The use of block colours emphasise bright lights while the harsh lines accentuate the ripples of rain. The white border around the mysterious individual emphasises their visibility within an obscure world.

“Maintaining an Empire” – Acrylic painting.

The monotonous style inspired by Lidia Wylangowska together with the strong crease lines in the clothing, emphasise the rugged sense of manual labour. By eliminating the busy background, the gentleman and lawnmower become the focal points. Since the individual is solely focusing on the task in hand, emotions are not apparent. Contrastingly, the monochrome image could portray a sense of tedium and thus the feeling of boredom.

“Hush” – Acrylic painting. My copy of Lidia Wylangowska’s “Hush”.

The monotonous tones and blue streaks create a supernatural sense, which complements the enveloping feather strokes. The closed stance and sharp shading on the individual’s face discharge a cowering sensation, which supports the painting's title.

“Hand with Reflecting Sphere” – Pencil drawing. My copied illustration from Jamie Browne's piece that was inspired by M.C. Escher.

A skeleton is included in M.C Escher’s reflection piece to capture the concepts of multiple perspectives, personal depth, and disappearance. The dripping sphere into an old individual’s hand represents life melting away; the skeleton shows the end result of this passing time. The dark pencil tones enhance the melancholic aspect.

“Reflecting on Your Fruity Self” – Acrylic painting.

The rough texture emphasises the contrasting colours and characteristics between each fruit. The mirror allows the viewer to see hidden aspects of the fruit from their static position.
